This
summer a group from Renewal Ministries did a short term Mission trip here in
Cameroon. Our dear friend, Jeanne
Thompson, from Sacred Heart parish, was one of the Missionaries who came. She
knew God had called her to come to Cameroon, but she was not sure in what ways
God would use her. But God used her mightily.
She
was a guest speaker on the five minute radio slot that I broadcast daily with
another woman, Margaret. But one minute
into the show, the Holy Spirit took over and what happened was so beautiful. We
talked for thirty minutes about the Pro-life vision that Jeanne has and her
desire to keep young girls from having abortions. Jeanne spoke with power and
conviction about God’s love and mercy. Margaret was so touched that she gave
out her phone number for girls to call if they were considering an abortion.
Within a few minutes of the airing, three girls had contacted Margaret. And
that was the beginning of the initiative we are calling “Jeanne’s Babies”.
We
have been able to provide sonograms for girls considering abortion and helping
to provide nutritious foods, as well as ongoing counseling. Recently, we were able to start one young
woman with her own small business, selling fish pies. The program is still in
the infancy, but with God’s grace, financial and community help, and the
ongoing radio broadcasting, we hope to grow Jeanne’s Babies.
Our
Poster child, named Christine, we call Hope on the air, now truly has
hope. Now five months pregnant, looks
healthy, has a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She no longer dreads having the boy within
her, but is excitedly awaiting her due date. We plan to have a baby shower for
her in February.
While
she was here, Jeanne was also able to do a presentation to HIV positive men and
women about God’s unconditional love.
She then showed how precious life was at all stages by letting the
participants hold life-like models of babies in utero.
Jeanne
is one of the most inspiring women I have ever met. Her love for God just
radiates from her and she is an example of someone who has whole heartedly
surrendered her life to Christ. I am excited that we have started this program
and look forward to coming along side many women (and men) in the future.
